Marcia Shearer
Career Highlights
Marcia Shearer is considered a trailblazer in local girls swimming. While at Northwestern High School, she petitioned the school to start a swim program, becoming the only member during the 1976-1977 inaugural season. In fact, the school did not have a pool so they allowed her to continue to practice at the Kokomo YMCA while representing the Tigers.
During her senior season, she won two sectional titles and advanced to the 3rd Annual IHSAA Girls Swimming and Diving State Finals at Ball State University, where she led the Tigers to a 15th place finish by scoring all of the team’s points. She won the state championship in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of :55.50 while finishing fourth in the 50-yard freestyle. As of 2015, she was still the only swimming state champ in Tigers history.
In 1975, she was a state AAU swim champion and ranked fifth in the nation after swimming at the AAU National Outdoor Swim Meet that year. Shearer was also a participant at the 1976 United States Olympic Trials.
At Indiana State University, Shearer was a three-time Most Valuable Swimmer with nine individual records and five relay records at graduation. She was named the ISU Female Athlete of the Year in 1981.
