Pettay was the assistant to hall of fame coach John Bingaman as the Kats won the IHSAA State Championship in 1985 and 1986 and then served as the head coach when the Wildkats claimed another state title in 1988. Pettay also was the head coach of IHSAA State Medalist Chris Williamson in 1987.

Pettay led his girls teams to four sectional titles, one regional crown, and five state finals appearances, including a fourth-place finish. His boys teams claimed three sectionals, one regional, and had six state finals appearances. He was the North Central Conference Coach of the Year in boys golf in 1987-88 and 1988-89, and was the NCC Coach of the Year in girls golf for the 1989-90 school year.
