Drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1995 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft, 1991 Kokomo High School grad Anthony Shumaker was selected in the 23rd round out of Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee. The left-hander made his MLB debut on July 23, 1999, drawing the start and pitching eight innings against the Atlanta Braves at Veterans Stadium. On October 2nd of the same year, he made his final MLB appearance, an inning of relief against the Montreal Expos at the Phillies home park. Highlighted in his career was a strikeout of slugger Mark McGwire, who had 65 home runs and 147 RBIs that season. Shumaker spent the majority of his seven minor league seasons with the Phillies organization. He was picked up off waivers by the New York Mets in April 2000 and traded to the Baltimore Orioles in July 2000. He signed as a free agent with the Chicago Cubs in 2002, his final season of professional baseball. Shumaker was a three-time All-Lake Michigan Conference and NAIA All-District selection with Cardinal Stritch. He finished his collegiate career with 324 strikeouts in 270 innings. During his senior season with Kokomo, Shumaker started nine of the 10 games he appeared in, striking out 56 in 48 innings. He also had a short stint with Kokomo’s semipro CFD Saints baseball team and played summer baseball for Kokomo’s Connie Mack squad. Anthony and his wife, Shelley, have been married 22 years and live in Paducah, KY. They have three children: Nick, Katelyn, and Emily. Anthony works for McCoy Construction & Forestry.
