Career Highlights

Excelling in both basketball and track at the high school and collegiate levels, Norman Hankins was named to the all-tourney team of Kokomo High School’s 1941 Final Four basketball squad. Hankins led the nation in scoring at the collegiate level with Lawrence Tech in Detroit during the 1947-48 season. Between those accolades, Hankins served in the Navy during World War II. While in the Navy, Hankins qualified for the NCAA Track and Field Championships in 1944 and 1945, finishing sixth in the 220-yard dash in 1944 and fifth in 1945. Following high school, Hankins signed up to play basketball at IU before deciding to play at Lawrence Tech, where he averaged 14 points per game in his first season. In 1943-44, Hankins entered the U.S. Navy’s V-12 program and was honorably discharged in 1946, returning to Lawrence Tech and averaging 16 points in his second season. During his final two seasons, Hankins led Lawrence Tech to the NAIA national tournament. During his junior season, Hankins led the nation in scoring with 22 points per game. He played 102 career games at Lawrence Tech, scoring 1,682 career points. Hankins was named to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame’s Silver Anniversary team in 1966. In 2012, he was selected to the Lawrence Tech Hall of Fame’s inaugural class with his No. 4 jersey being retired. Norman Hankins was married to Doris “Annie” for 61 years and both are deceased. Norman and “Annie” have three adult children, Dirk Hankins, LuAnn Yaroch and Kelly Snider.
