Drafted by Cincinnati in the 21st round of the 1972 Major League Baseball draft, Dan Dumoulin successfully hurled his way from Kokomo High School into the big leagues, signing with the Reds in 1974 and spending seven years with the organization.

Following stops in the Billings, Montana Rookie League, Class A club Tampa, and AA squad Trois-Rivières, Québec, Dumoulin found himself with the AAA Indianapolis Indians in 1977 before getting the call to join the Reds that season. He made his Reds debut on September 5, 1977.

Over the 1977 and 1978 seasons with Cincinnati, Dumoulin went 1-0 in eight games, allowing 19 hits over 10.1 innings, and striking out seven. He picked up his first and only major league win on the final day of the 1978 season (10/1/1978) over Atlanta, 10-8 at Riverfront Stadium, working two innings of relief in a 14-inning game.

Dumoulin started the 1978 season with Indianapolis, where he strung together an impressive 12-6 campaign (9-5 as a starter), pitching four complete games. In his first start with the Indians in 1978, he pitched a complete game shutout.

Dumoulin spent part of 1979 and all of 1980 with the Indians, but was sidelined with an injury.

Dumoulin played three seasons of varsity baseball at KHS, and also played two years of varsity football.

In 1972, Dumoulin helped pitch American Legion Post 6 to its first state championship.
